Injection moulding and thermoforming are two different plastic manufacturing processes used to create food packaging.
Injection moulding involves injecting molten plastic into a precision mould to produce rigid containers with consistent dimensions and detailed features. It is particularly suitable for durable food containers, tamper-evident packaging and reusable packaging.
Thermoforming involves heating a plastic sheet and forming it into a mould to create lightweight, thin-walled packaging. This process is commonly used for food trays, hinged containers and clear food packaging.
Bonson uses both technologies to provide packaging solutions suited to different product requirements.

In-mould labelling (IML) is a packaging decoration process in which a pre-printed label is placed inside the mould before the plastic
container is formed. The label becomes integrated with the container during injection moulding, creating a seamless, durable finish without the need for separate adhesive application.
IML offers high-quality graphics, excellent durability and opportunities for distinctive branding. It is particularly suited to retail food packaging where shelf appeal and product presentation are important.
Yes. Bonson's Auckland manufacturing facility operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing the production capacity and flexibility to support high-volume manufacturing and custom packaging projects.
Production requirements, lead times and minimum order quantities depend on the packaging design, material and manufacturing process. Our team can discuss your anticipated volumes and project requirements to determine a suitable solution.

Materials, Quality & Sustainability: Frequently asked questions
Yes. Bonson manufactures selected food packaging products using recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET), including material derived from post-consumer plastic bottles.
Our thermoforming technology enables us to transform rPET sheet into functional food packaging, supporting the use of recycled materials and helping keep valuable resources in circulation.
Explore Bonson's rPET packaging.
Bonson manufactures food packaging using materials including polypropylene (PP, plastic identification code 5) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET, plastic identification code 1).
Both materials can be recycled through suitable recycling systems. However, actual recyclability depends on factors such as packaging design, local collection services, sorting infrastructure and contamination.
We encourage customers to consider the end-of-life options available for their packaging and can help identify materials suited to their product requirements and sustainability objectives.
Bonson's New Zealand manufacturing operations are supported by independently certified management systems, including ISO 9001 for Quality
