Environmental Responsibility Built Into Every Process

Bonson's New Zealand manufacturing operations are supported by an ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System, providing a structured framework for identifying environmental risks, improving resource efficiency and driving continuous improvement. Our environmental initiatives are integrated into everyday operations, from packaging design to energy and water management.

Certification note: ISO 14001 certification referenced here applies to Bonson Industrial Co. Ltd's New Zealand manufacturing operations.

Sustainability initiatives and practices for how we operate

We are constantly looking at how our manufacturing practices and our supply chain can minimise the impact that our products and business operations have on the environment. This involves creating initiatives around sustainability and ensuring that sustainability is an important consideration in our 'continuous improvement' approach to business development.

Sustainable product design targeting waste reduction

Our focus on designing lighter weight products, while maintaining desired performance and tensile strength, has helped our customers meet product specifications with less plastic material. The lighter containers are also more cost-effective to transport.

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency can have significant impacts on the environment, we have taken a number of steps to reduce our energy consumption:

• Investing in smart power monitoring technology to ensure our facility is operating efficiently 24/7.

• Adopting louvres and tinted glass with a high shading coefficient to reduce heat build-up and minimise light penetration. Lighting controls and sensors have also been installed throughout the facility.

• Installing energy-efficient VRV systems to maintain optimum operational temperatures.

Water conservation and storm water protection

One of the essential requirements for plastic injection moulding is proper cooling where water plays a significant role. Some of the initiatives we have in place to conserve water:

• Specially designed filters to protect the storm water system from contamination in the event of any accidental spills by fine sediments.

• The expertly designed roofing structure effectively captures and channels roof water throughout our facility to the harvest tank for storage. This water is then used to fuel our cooling systems and amenities.

• Sensors have been introduced to all hand washing facilities

Frequently asked questions

Bonson takes a proactive approach to reducing the environmental impacts of its New Zealand manufacturing operations through energy efficiency, water conservation, responsible product design and continuous improvement.

Our purpose-built Auckland facility incorporates environmentally sustainable design principles, supported by smart energy monitoring, rainwater harvesting, water-saving technology and initiatives to minimise unnecessary packaging materials.

These measures form part of our ongoing commitment to improving resource efficiency and reducing waste throughout our manufacturing processes.

Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) involves designing buildings, facilities and processes to use resources more efficiently and minimise environmental impacts.

At Bonson's Auckland manufacturing facility, ESD principles have influenced features such as energy-efficient lighting, temperature control systems, building design and water conservation infrastructure.

By considering environmental performance from the design stage, we can improve operational efficiency and reduce resource consumption over the life of the facility.

Bonson has invested in technologies and building features designed to reduce energy consumption and improve operational efficiency.

These include smart power monitoring systems that track energy use throughout our 24/7 manufacturing operations, energy-efficient temperature control systems, automated lighting controls and sensors, and building features that help minimise unwanted heat build-up.

Monitoring energy consumption helps us identify opportunities for further efficiency improvements as part of our continuous improvement programme.

Water plays an important role in plastic injection moulding, particularly for cooling manufacturing equipment and moulds.

Bonson's Auckland facility incorporates rainwater harvesting infrastructure that collects roof water for storage and use in cooling systems and amenities.

Water-saving sensors have also been installed in handwashing facilities to help minimise unnecessary consumption.

These initiatives support more efficient water use throughout our manufacturing operations.

Bonson has implemented stormwater protection measures at its Auckland manufacturing facility to help minimise the risk of contamination.

Specially designed filtration systems help prevent fine sediments from entering stormwater infrastructure in the event of accidental spills.

These controls form part of our broader environmental management approach, which focuses on identifying potential risks and implementing measures to reduce environmental impacts.

Lightweight packaging design aims to minimise the amount of material used in a container while maintaining the strength, functionality and food protection required for its intended application.

By optimising packaging dimensions and material distribution, Bonson can reduce unnecessary plastic use in selected products without compromising their required performance.

Lighter packaging can also reduce transport weight, potentially improving freight efficiency and reducing transportation-related emissions.

Yes. Bonson manufactures selected food packaging products using recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET), including material derived from post-consumer plastic bottles.

Using recycled PET helps reduce demand for virgin plastic and supports the circular economy by keeping recovered materials in use.

Our manufacturing capabilities include thermoforming technology that enables recycled PET sheets to be formed into functional food packaging products.

The recycled content and suitability of individual products depend on their specifications and intended applications.

Bonson Industrial Co. Ltd's New Zealand manufacturing operations maintain ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification.

ISO 14001 is an internationally recognised standard that provides a structured framework for identifying environmental risks, managing environmental responsibilities and improving environmental performance.

The certification supports Bonson's commitment to integrating environmental considerations into everyday operations and continuously reviewing opportunities for improvement.

Learn more about Our Systems.

Bonson considers material efficiency, packaging functionality and environmental impacts during the product development process.

Our approach includes optimising container designs to minimise unnecessary material use, exploring suitable recycled materials and considering how packaging may be reused or recycled at the end of its useful life.

By integrating these considerations early in the design process, we aim to develop packaging solutions that balance food safety, performance, commercial requirements and environmental responsibility.

Bonson's environmental initiatives support more efficient manufacturing processes and the development of packaging solutions that make responsible use of materials and resources.

For customers, this can mean access to lightweight packaging designs, selected recycled-content products and packaging manufactured under an
independently certified environmental management system.

Our team can also help businesses explore packaging options that support their own sustainability objectives without compromising food safety, functionality or product quality.
