Bonson’s story begins in 1984. Founded by the Tsui family as a small packaging company in a modest warehouse in Auckland, New Zealand, it has grown ever since. With a mission to create advantage in everything we do, all Bonson’s packaging solutions come with a different level of care – everyone genuinely cares about their collective contribution.
Today we are one of the leading food packaging suppliers and manufacturers in Australasia, providing diverse product ranges that are in high demand. Our innovation and manufacturing capabilities are internationally recognised by the food industry. We are proud to be supplying Australasia’s big and small food companies to help them create advantages through innovative packaging.

From a small family of relatives to the now greatly extended Bonson team of 60 'family' members, we remain a family run business and the original core values on which the business was built are still central to the business. Our values are integrated in how we approach service, innovation and sustainability. Our Brands
More Than 40 Years of Packaging Innovation
For more than 40 years, Bonson Packaging has grown from a New Zealand plastics manufacturer into a packaging business serving customers across New Zealand and Australia.
Our history reflects an ongoing focus on manufacturing, food packaging innovation, quality, food safety and more sustainable packaging solutions. From the launch of established food packaging ranges such as BetterSelection™, Homeal™ and BioChoice™, to investment in In-Mould Labelling (IML), thermoforming and recycled PET (rPET), Bonson has continued to develop its capabilities in response to the changing needs of the food industry.
More recently, initiatives such as RePlay Return™ have extended this focus into reusable and circular packaging systems.
1984 – Bonson Plastics Founded
Bonson Plastics was founded in Auckland, New Zealand, beginning what would become more than four decades of packaging manufacturing and innovation.
1990 – SAVPAC Marketing Co. Ltd. Incorporated
SAVPAC Marketing Co. Ltd. was incorporated, supporting the continued development and growth of the business.
1994 – BONSON Industrial Co. Ltd. Incorporated
BONSON Industrial Co. Ltd. was incorporated in New Zealand.
1995 – Manufacturing Operations Expand in Avondale
Operations and production shifted to 47 Lansford Crescent, Avondale, Auckland.
1996 – BetterSelection™ Range Launched
Bonson launched the BetterSelection™ range of food packaging solutions.
1997 – First Container Exported to Australia
Bonson exported its first container to Australia, marking an important step in the company's expansion beyond New Zealand.
1998 – New Avondale Warehouse Built
A new Bonson warehouse was built at 43 Lansford Crescent, Avondale, Auckland.
1999 – Homeal™ Range Launched
Bonson launched the Homeal™ range of food packaging.
2001 – Production Moves to Barrhead Place
Production shifted to 12 Barrhead Place, Avondale, Auckland.
2002 – Quality and Food Safety Certification
Bonson achieved ISO 9001:2000 Management System certification and HACCP Food Safety Program certification.
2004 – ISO 14001 Certification
Bonson achieved ISO 14001 environmental management certification.
2005 – Warehouse Capacity Expanded
Bonson expanded its warehousing operations to 97 Lansford Crescent, Avondale.
2006 – BioChoice™ Range Launched
Bonson launched the BioChoice™ packaging range.
2007 – ClearVision™ Range Launched
The ClearVision™ packaging range was launched.
2008 – In-Mould Labelling Introduced
Bonson introduced In-Mould Labelling (IML), expanding its custom packaging and decoration capabilities.
2010 – Bonson™ Tamper Evident Range Launched
The Bonson™ Tamper Evident range was launched.
2011 – Awards and Relocation to New Lynn
Bonson received two New Zealand Pride in Print Gold Awards.
The company also relocated to 59–65 Portage Road, New Lynn, Auckland, establishing the site as a major base for its New Zealand operations.
2014 – Celebrating 30 Years
Bonson celebrated 30 years of manufacturing success in New Zealand.
2015 – Packaging Council Australia Design Award
Bonson received a Packaging Council Australia Design Award.
2016 – WorldStar Packaging Award
Bonson received international recognition with a WorldStar Packaging Award.
2018 – Bonson-Savpac Established in Australia
Bonson-Savpac Pty Ltd was incorporated in Australia, strengthening Bonson's presence in the Australian packaging market.
2019 – Acquisition of Wong Lee Pty Ltd
Bonson expanded its Australian operations through the acquisition of Wong Lee Pty Ltd.
2020 – Bonson-Savpac Rebrand and FSSC 22000 Certification
BONSON-SAVPAC was rebranded as part of the continued development of the business.
Bonson also achieved FSSC 22000 Food Safety System Certification.
2022 – Thermoforming and Recycled PET Manufacturing
Bonson commissioned thermoforming machinery and manufactured its first recycled PET (rPET) product, expanding its local manufacturing capabilities into recycled-content packaging.
2024 – Celebrating 40 Years
Bonson celebrated 40 years of manufacturing success, marking four decades since the business was founded in 1984.
2025 – RePlay Return™ Trial Launches
Bonson launched the first trial of RePlay Return™ with New World, introducing a returnable food container system designed to keep packaging in circulation through repeated use.
2026 – RePlay Return™ Wins Four PIDA Awards
RePlay Return™ received three Gold Awards and one Silver Award at the 2026 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA), recognising the project across sustainability, design, labelling and food packaging categories.
From Manufacturing to Circular Packaging Solutions
Bonson's history has been shaped by continued investment in packaging manufacturing, product development and new technologies.
Today, our capabilities span injection moulding, thermoforming, recycled PET packaging and In-Mould Labelling, alongside an extensive range of foodservice and food packaging solutions for customers in New Zealand and Australia.
Our development of RePlay Return™ represents another step in that journey, exploring how reusable packaging and return systems can complement recycling and other approaches to packaging circularity.
As the packaging industry continues to evolve, Bonson remains focused on developing practical packaging solutions that balance product performance, food safety, functionality and environmental considerations.
